Just got the Year One and found out Elmer Maas died. There is never anything in the newspapers or TV when the best people go. It seems there is so much hatred, greed and delusion in the world today, and we needed Elmer to push it away for us. Every time I see a young person join the movement for compassion, sharing and understanding I feel extremely relieved, because I know the work will go on. From my conversations with Elmer, he made me feel he was headed for a better place, so I hope people won't feel too much sadness. His spirit is still here with us, raising hell in his smiling, gentle way in calling for a better world. In my many marches with Jesse Jackson he always shouted that we have to keep hope alive, giving us the strength to take another step. Elmer's spirit is still here, with that living hope for our feet
