HOLY WEEK FAITH AND RESISTANCE RETREAT
MARCH 23 – 26, 2005
 |
In the name of God,
stop killing your sisters and brothers.
In the name of God,
stop making machinery of death.
In the name of God,
Stop justifying war and murder.
In the name of God
Make injustice visible.
In the name of God
Protect the poor and the powerless.
In the name of god
Work for reconciliation with truth. |
In the name of God celebrate life, goodness and beauty.
In the name of God ensure fair distribution, economic opportunity, justice and food security for everyone.
In this holy week, we remember the execution of Jesus .
We remember also, the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero
exactly 25 years ago on on March 24, 1980 .
We take to heart Romero 's plea to the Salvadoran soldiers,
who killed 70,000 of their own people
and apply it to ourselves, our leadership and our military.
We gather this Week to say to the powers that be:
Stop the Killing .
We gather knowing that until we make injustice visible
we will be unable to protect the poor and powerless,
work for reconciliation,
celebrate life,
ensure fair distribution, economic opportunity or justice for anyone.
This is our work! This is our hope!
God has told us what is good and what God requires of us
To do justice.
To love righteousness.
To walk humbly with our God . (Micah 6:8)
We invite you to gather - to reflect and to act
On behalf of justice for the oppressed, the abandoned, the murdered,
and those left behind to weep and mourn…
Against the injustice that plagues our planet,
a plague that finds so much of its origin in our own government…
For righteousness for the oppressed, the abandoned, the murdered,
and those left to weep and mourn…
And to walk humbly with our God, knowing that it is not our task to complete the work
but that we cannot shun our responsibility to fulfill our part.
WHERE - St. Stephen & the Incarnation Church , 16th & Newton Streets NW, Washington D.C.
WHEN - begin with supper at 6:00 p.m., March 23, 2005 to early afternoon March 26, 2005
WHAT - A time to reflect/act/reflect.
- A program - Wes Howard Brook and Sue Ferguson Johnson will lead reflection sessions each of our days together to help us deepen our sense of the theme articulated above.
- We will learn from and be inspired by our speakers; we will discuss how we can bring our message to the public; we will plan to do that; we will do it; and we will evaluate how well or badly we did it. Then we'll repeat the process.
- We will pray together and maybe sing and laugh some.
- We will provide simple meals and sleeping bag space at the Church. If you require more civilized accommodations, please let us know and we will try to connect you with a source.
- There will be a program for children but we'd want to know ages and numbers of children coming to be better prepared to provide for them. WHY - we gather because we know how urgent are these times and how deeply so many are suffering and how fragile is this spirit called hope.
The retreat is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker and Jonah House Communities.
