FAITH AND RESISTANCE RETREAT

AUGUST 5 – 9, 2004

REMEMBERING THE BOMBINGS

OF HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI

WAR AND DESTRUCTION ARE NEVER OKAY

We are becoming more and more convinced that disputes which arise between states should not be resolved by recourse to arms, but rather by negotiation. We grant indeed that this conviction is chiefly based on the terrible destructive force of modern weapons and a fear of the calamities and frightful destruction which such weapons would cause. Therefore, in an age such as ours which prides itself on its atomic energy it is contrary to reason to hold that war is now a suitable way to restore rights which have been violated. (from Pacem in Terris – Encyclical by Pope John XXIII )

At St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church

16 th and Newton Streets, NW,

Washington D.C.

Simple meals and sleeping bag space will be provided.

There will be a program for children.

THE RUINED DOME of the CATHEDRAL

The bombing of Hiroshima occurred on the feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus. “This is my beloved, my son!” The voice the disciples heard did not stop there. It continued: “Listen to Him!” This is what Peter , James , and John were not yet doing on the mountain of Transfiguration . They had just heard Jesus speak in prayer about his 'departure'; they were still hearing what they wanted to hear, a triumphant Christ , without a Cross.

And the message is not simply for them, it is also for us. And it offers us the same challenge: “Listen to Him!”

THE TRANSFIGURATION BY RUBLEV

Learn to discern his voice, and the true content of his mission and preaching; not what we want to hear. During this retreat, we hope and pray and open ourselves to the gift of such listening.

Please join us –together we might learn to listen; together we might change hearts (beginning with our own) so that the crimes – Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Tokyo, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Central America, Colombia, Chili, Afghanistan, Iraq… never again be repeated.

How urgent, in these days, that we continue to rebuild the beloved community in the face of the terrors of war.

Let us know if you can be with us
