Sisters of Sacred Earth and Space

Words and Music: Holly Gwinn Graham 2004
Chorus: Vitale and Zaragoza 1990

A year to the day that the USA started bombing Afghanistan
Three sisters of peace, knowing wars must cease, implemented their
Plowshares plan...
At Greeley in Colorado they found weapons of missile offense.
Carrying only bolt cutters, hammers and blood, they cut through the lock on the fence.
In the early dawn light, in uniforms white, labeled
“Weapons Inspection Team”
The disarmament nuns found nuclear bombs camouflaged in a pastoral scene.
So they hammered the lid of a Minuteman III, and their blood they symbolically poured,
Singing “We shed our own blood and not that of others,
For we love the Earth and Our Lord.”

Sacred the land, sacred the water, sacred the sky, holy and true.
Sacred all life, sacred each other.
All reflect God who is good.

They were seen on the site by military might whose cameras reported a lie.
No women detected...3 men they expected, mustachioed and 6 feet high.
In 45 minutes the cops and M.P.s in their Humvees demolished the gates.
Behind drawn machine guns, they handcuffed the nuns, who lay facedown awaiting their fates.
They were hauled off to jail, where they forewent their bail in a small Colorado town.
In a windowless cell's crowded version of hell, seven months the three were locked down.
But for Jackie and Carol and Ardeth, the choice had been perfectly clear...
They were set to be tried for defending the right of all people to live free of fear.

Sacred the land, sacred the water, sacred the sky, holy and true.
Sacred all life, sacred each other.
All reflect God who is good.

They were charged with obstruction, intended destruction of items of national defense.
They were told they must pay for the damage that day that the Humvees had done to the fence.
Though Judge Blackburn had heard from their lawyers about citizens' rights to resist,
In his first Federal case, he became a disgrace and denied each defense on the list.
Now a Minuteman III packs a first-strike decree 20 times the
Hiroshima bomb.
To a civilized mind, just to build one's a crime, but they're plenty where that one came from.
These weapons of death and destruction contravene international law.
To save earth and space and the whole human race is the vision
These Plowshares nuns saw...
But the carefully screened 12 jurors convened, hearing nothing of substance nor strength,
While the prosecutor, with his mind full of war, had no case though he went on at length.
In this kangaroo court, defense lawyers could say nothing of Nuremberg law.
The trial passed in this way, with the truth locked away, swallowed up in the war machine's maw.
When the verdict came in, all the faces were grim, and “Guilty” was heard in the court.
Eight to ten for the three the judge might decree and no chance for a defense retort.
On July 25 th , with the Women in Black, our dear silent sisters stood tall.
The sentence came down. They'd do 3 to 4 years.
It was surely no justice at all.

Sacred the land, sacred the water, sacred the sky, holy and true.
Sacred all life, sacred each other.
All reflect God who is good.

Supporters next day took the caravan way, demonstrating at nuclear sites.
A small plane could be seen flying over the scene with a banner that summed it up right.
“There are weapons of mass destruction, but they're not where old Bush wants to go...
We have found the weapons of mass destruction right here in Colorado!”
So the three sisters now are in federal prisons, each in a separate place,
Where they live, they pray and they work everyday with poor women of every race.
It's a Plowshares tradition they follow in demanding an end to wars' harms,
Their victory is real and the message is clear...we must all say a
Farewell to Arms!
We will beat our swords into Plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks, and our hearts will rejoice, as we sing in one voice, as it's promised in all holy books...

Sacred the land, sacred the water, sacred the sky, holy and true.
Sacred all life, sacred each other.
All reflect God who is good.

LOVE WILL LEAD ME OVER

Holly Gwinn Graham 2002

 CHORUS:

LOVE WILL LEAD ME OVER
AS I STEP ACROSS THE LINE
PEACE WILL BE MY COVER
AS I STEP ACROSS THE LINE
JUSTICE IS THE REASON,
I'VE MADE THAT REASON MINE,
AND LOVE IS ALL AROUND ME
AS I STEP ACROSS THE LINE
AS I STEP ACROSS THE LINE

VERSE 1:

THEY ARE ALL OUR CHILDREN
NO MATTER NEAR OR FAR
I TAKE THIS STEP FOR THEM
NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE...

CHORUS AS ABOVE

VERSE 2:

THIS PLANET IS OUR ONLY HOME
IT'S TIME WE LEARNED TO SHARE
TAKE A STEP FOR PEACE ON EARTH
AND ALL LIFE EVERYWHERE!

CHORUS
