November 2004--The Monday Night Masters: Willa Bickham, Jeanne Fischer, Marshall Kinsley, Joanne Manzo and Elizabeth McAlister
held a watercolor art exhibit at Viva House Catholic Worker in Baltimore. We propose that every art museum consider serving meals to those who are hungry, and soup kitchens continue to double as art galleries. |
Following upon Phil Berrigan's funeral at St. Peter Claver Church, Jonah House has enjoyed a deepening relationship with the church and with Joe DelVecchio, S.S.J., its pastor. For the second summer, young people attending the Bible Camp from both St. Peter Claver and Pius X parishes came to Jonah House the week of Aug. 9. The camp developed the theme of becoming players on God's team; we were to expose the young folk to other dimensions of team work. Taking care of God's creation is certainly part of being on God's team. So we worked with our special guests in the garden; we dug out dead trees; we walked in the woods; we harvested fruits and vegetables; we were thankful for the trees and animals. After a bible study on one of Paul's journeys, we sent balloons on a journey with postcards attached - asking that whoever finds the balloons and cards return them with a note. We ended our time together with wheelbarrow races. None of the children wanted to leave; several wanted to plant something (and see it grow); we proposed that they plant their own garden here next May and they seemed enthusiastic to do that. Pumpkins and watermelon seemed to be the crop of choice.

Lining up for the first wheelbarrow race. |

About to launch balloons on their journey. |

As they near the finish line, it is wheelbarrow to wheelbarrow. |

Now it gets more difficult - wheelbarrows with passengers.
